Practice JLPT is built on work other people gave away. This page names it, links it, and states the licence each piece is used under.

Stroke order

The animated stroke-order diagrams are not drawn here. Both sets come from open projects that made the hard part, the stroke geometry, freely reusable.

    Every kanji stroke-order diagram on the site, on the kanji pages and in the stroke player.

    The SVGs are stripped of their XML wrapper and restyled so the player can animate them; the stroke paths themselves are unchanged. Those reshaped files stay under the same share-alike licence.

Reading passages

The passages that were not written for this site are real Japanese, published long enough ago to be out of copyright.

  • Aozora Bunko (青空文庫)Public domain

    The public-domain reading passages at every level, chosen because they happen to fall inside a level's word list. Their English translations are machine-made and are not the work of the volunteers who transcribed them.

    Texts transcribed and proofread by Aozora Bunko volunteers.

    Public domain. Author and work copyright have both expired.

Example sentences

The Japanese examples under the grammar points, vocabulary entries and kanji are corpus sentences and published literature, not writing done for this site.

    The example sentences on the grammar, vocabulary and kanji pages, and their English translations.

    Most of the Japanese and English came to Tatoeba from the Tanaka Corpus. The grammar examples store the Tatoeba id of both halves of each sentence, and so do the vocabulary and kanji examples filled in from the corpus.

  • Aozora BunkoPublic domain

    Example sentences on the vocabulary and kanji pages for the words and characters Tatoeba has no sentence for. These are quoted from literature and carry no translation.

    Taken from 343 works whose copyright has expired, transcribed by Aozora Bunko volunteers. Every sentence records the work it came from. Only texts in modern characters and modern kana were used.

Dictionary data

The word meanings and the kanji reference data are not compiled here. Both come from the EDRDG's dictionary projects, which have been maintained since the 1990s.

The anime recommendations are written here. The facts around them, and the cover art that identifies each show, are not.

  • AniListDatabase content contributed by AniList users

    Titles, Japanese titles, years, episode counts, runtimes and studios on the anime topic page, plus the cover art on each card.

    Cover art remains the copyright of the studios and licensors who own each series; it appears at thumbnail size to identify the show being recommended. The difficulty banding and the notes on each card are ours.
