How Long Does It Take to Prepare for the JLPT?
Estimate the study time you can sustain, then adjust it using reading, listening and practice results. A fixed number of hours cannot tell you when you will pass.
Start with what you can do now
Read the official descriptions of N5 to N1, then try questions at the level you are considering. Record which passages you can understand without help and which listening questions you can answer on a first attempt. Knowing many words and understanding them in a conversation are different tasks.
Prior study and familiarity with Chinese characters can change your starting point. Do not assume that knowing characters halves the time you need: Japanese readings, grammar and listening still need separate practice.
How much study time does your schedule provide?
This table is arithmetic for studying every day, not an estimate of hours required to pass a level. It gives you a budget to divide between new material, review, reading and listening.

For a five-day week, multiply your daily hours by five, then by the number of weeks. For example, one hour on five days a week for 12 weeks gives you 60 hours. Leave room for missed days and review instead of filling every hour with new material.
Try a two-week planning cycle
- Measure your starting point. Attempt one exercise in each relevant skill on the practice page. Record mistakes and guesses before reviewing the answers.
- Choose a manageable schedule. Use a study plan for your level, and reserve sessions for reading and listening as well as vocabulary and grammar.
- Check transfer. After two weeks, try different questions at the same level. See whether you understand new passages more easily, rather than relying on answers you remember.
- Adjust the next two weeks. Spend more time on persistent gaps, or reduce new material if review is piling up. Reassess your target date from what you can sustain.
