Turn the N4 grammar list into practice

Read the words before and after a pattern. Verb forms and the relationship between clauses often decide whether a pattern fits.

  1. Choose a pattern and read its meaning and usage before looking at the examples.
  2. Check how the pattern attaches to the preceding word. Compare the Japanese sentence with its translation, then explain the relationship in your own words.
  3. Try the grammar tests and return to patterns you confuse. Recalling a translation alone does not show that you can choose the pattern in context.
