代わりに・かわりに (warini kawarini)

Meaning & usage

代わりに means something is done or used in place of something else, or as an alternative. It follows a noun directly, as in フランス語のかわりに, and can also stand alone at the start of a sentence to connect two alternatives. Both kanji and kana spellings appear in everyday use.

1. 仕事しごとをする気きがしないな。代かわりに映画えいがでも見みに行いかないか。

   I don't feel like working; what about going to a cinema instead?

2. 歩いても行けますが、代わりに私の車でそこまで送りましょう。
