Meaning & usage
ようだ expresses that something appears to be the case based on impression or resemblance, much like みたいだ. It follows plain form verbs and i adjectives, な adjectives plus な, and nouns plus の, as in 食べたようだ or 静かなようだ. Before a noun it becomes ような, and before verbs of perception like 見える it becomes ように. It sounds slightly more formal or written than みたいだ.
