Meaning & usage
ように言う is used to report telling or asking someone to do something or not to do something. The person who is told is marked with に, as in 私に洗うように言いました, and the construction often appears as ように言われる when describing what the speaker was told to do. It follows the dictionary form for affirmative requests and the ない form for negative requests, as in 行くように言う and 行かないように言う. Do not use a direct command like 行け before ように言う.
