という風に (toiu ni)

Meaning & usage

という風に reports the gist or manner in which information was conveyed, meaning in such a way that the preceding clause was understood. It follows a plain form verb or adjective, such as 休む, 休まない or 休んだ, and nouns with だ, then pairs with verbs of transmission like 頼む, 伝える, 注意する or 聞いている. It cannot follow a direct command or prohibition like 行け or 行くな, so requests use the plain non past form. It sounds formal and indirect compared with と.
