通り（に） (ri ni)

Meaning & usage

You use 通り(に) to say an action or situation matches a plan, instruction, expectation, or prior statement, meaning in the same way as or in accordance with. It attaches directly to a noun without の, as in 約束通り and 時間通り, often read どおり, or to a verb in plain past or nonpast form, as in 言った通り and 聞いた通りに. When it describes how an action is done, に is usually added, while だ or です follows when it ends a sentence.
