もも (momo)

Meaning & usage

The pattern も～も links two or more items emphatically to say both A and B in affirmative sentences and neither A nor B in negative sentences. Attach も to each noun or phrase in place of は, が or を, as in 時間もお金もない, and with na adjectives or nouns used predicatively use でもある, as in 正直でもあり親切でもある. In negative sentences the single negative predicate at the end negates every item marked with も.

1. 彼かれは正直しょうじきでもあり親切しんせつでもある。

   He is at once honest and kind.

2. 良い戦争も悪い平和もあったためしはない。

   There never was a good war nor a bad peace.

3. 私はフランス語も英語も話せない。

   I can't speak either French or English.

4. 私は英語も、フランス語も、スペイン語も話せます。

   I speak English, French and Spanish.

5. 男の子も女の子も、かわいいと思う。

   I think both boys and girls are cute.

6. 旅行に行く時間もお金もないよ。

   I don't have the time or the money to take a trip.
