Meaning & usage

ないことには expresses that a desired result cannot happen unless a certain action is done first, as in 休まないことには or 食べてみないことには. It attaches to the full negative nai-form of a verb, followed by ことには, and the main clause that follows is almost always negative. The pattern stresses a necessary precondition rather than a general if. It is common in spoken and written Japanese for giving reasons or strong advice.
