Meaning & usage
なしでは expresses that something is impossible without the stated thing, as in lacking water or help. It attaches directly to a noun, as in 水なしでは or 助けなしでは, and is followed by a negative predicate such as 生きられない or やっていけない. The negative ending is required, and the predicate should name the specific action that is impossible, since a bare できない sounds incomplete. Note that 生きられない keeps its literal sense of being unable to live or survive.
