Meaning & usage
としては marks the standard or position from which a judgment is made, meaning 'for a...' or 'as far as ... is concerned.' It is used to evaluate ability or quality relative to a category, or to give an opinion from a personal standpoint. It attaches to a noun, as in 初心者としては or 私としては, and is followed by an evaluation or statement. Note that the judgment applies only within that frame, so it does not claim general excellence, and in conversation 私としては sounds soft and polite when expressing disagreement.
