Meaning & usage
目 marks an ordinal number and means -th, as in first, second, or third, when counting in order from a starting point. It attaches to a number plus a counter, such as 3番目, 2回目, 三つ目, or 5人目, and the resulting word works like a noun or like a な-adjective before another noun with の or に. Learners often try to use 目 with a bare number, but a counter is normally required, and the reading follows the counter, as in ふたつ目 or みっつ目.
