Meaning & usage
のみ means only and is the formal written equivalent of だけ. It attaches directly to a noun as in 英語のみ, and it can also follow a noun plus case particle as in によってのみ or のためにのみ, or come before another particle as in のみが and のみに. It is common in formal writing, notices, and instructions, and it appears in the fixed pattern のみならず to mean not only but also.
