のに (noni)

Meaning & usage

のに marks the action that requires time, money, effort, or evaluation in the main clause, meaning for doing or in order to do something. It follows the dictionary form of a verb, as in 買うのに or 走るのに, often with predicates about need, difficulty, duration, cost, or suitability. It cannot replace ために for a plain purpose action, so the main clause must describe a cost or judgment rather than a volitional act.
