に (ni)

Meaning & usage

The particle に marks the purpose of going or coming: attach it to a verb stem (the masu-stem without ます) to say what someone goes or comes to do, as in 会いに来る. It also appears in set patterns like のに (for the purpose of) after a plain-form clause.
