に (ni)

Meaning & usage

に marks the surface that something touches or ends up attached to, for results like writing, sticking, placing, spilling, or hitting. It follows a noun for the surface, as in かべに, ゆかに, or シャツに, and often pairs with verbs like はる, 書く, 置く, or つく. For an object resting on top of furniture, の上にあります is more natural than using the furniture noun with に alone, as in テーブルの上に.
