から (kara)

Meaning & usage

から marks a starting point in space, time, or source, equivalent to from or since in English. It attaches directly to nouns, as in 東京から or 友達から, and to the te-form of verbs, as in 食べてから, to show an action starts after another is completed. It is neutral in speech and writing, and it often pairs with まで to express a range.
