Meaning & usage
に marks the person who receives something or hears what you say, corresponding to to or for in English, and is used with verbs like あげる, 貸す, 書く, 電話をかける. It attaches directly to a noun for the recipient, forming the pattern recipient に object を verb, as in 母に花をあげました. Note that with 話す, 母に話す means tell something to your mother and usually needs what was told, while talking together with someone uses と instead.
