この (kono)

Meaning & usage

この placed directly before a time noun points to that period in the current cycle around the time of speaking, as in この夏 or この日曜日. Whether English uses this, last, or coming depends on where speech time falls, not on past or future verb endings. Note that for days of the week, a past Sunday is normally この前の日曜日, since この日曜日 alone does not cover a Sunday that has already passed.
