Meaning & usage
要る means something is needed or required, often translated as need. The thing that is needed comes before が, as in お金が要る, and the negative is 要らない, which is often written in kana as いらない with no change in meaning or politeness. It is a u verb, so the polite form is 要ります and the past is 要った.
