ので (node)

Meaning & usage

ので gives a reason or cause, linking it to the result that follows, much like から but with a softer, more formal tone. It attaches to plain forms of verbs and i-adjectives, to na-adjectives and nouns plus な, and to the past form as in 降ったので.

1. 雨あめがひどく降ふったのでグラウンドはぐしゃぐしゃだ。

   It rained heavily, so the playground is muddy.

2. すっぴんは恥ずかしいのであまり見ないで下さい。

   It's embarrassing to be seen without make-up so please don't stare.

3. お金がないので、プチッと旅行。

   As I don't have the money, it'll just be a short trip.

4. 食べられることなくそのたこは、海に帰ったのであった。

   That octopus returned to the sea without being eaten.

5. ピアニストのバッハ弾きが減っているのではないか。

   Haven't Bach-playing pianists become less common of late?

6. この一見、あたりまえのように見えることが、実は難しいのである。

   This, appearing at first glance to be perfectly obvious, is actually very difficult.

7. くれるのではなく、貸与だそうです。

   Apparently they aren't given, but loaned.

8. ＯＫが出たので、思わずグラスランナーのシーフ・バードというベタなキャラを作っちゃいましたよ。

   I got the OK so I unthinkingly created the clichéd 'grass runner thief/bard' character.
