How to tell them apart
から is the everyday, neutral way to give a reason and works in both casual and formal speech, while ので sounds softer and more polite, often used to avoid sounding too direct. With から the speaker's judgment feels subjective; with ので the reason is presented more objectively. Swapping them is most unnatural when you use ので for a blunt personal excuse like 頭が痛かったからです, or から in a formal written apology where ので is expected.
- から Use から when stating your reason directly in everyday speech or answering a why question.
- ので Use ので when you want to sound softer and more polite, especially in formal or written contexts.
