How to tell them apart
Both ほど and くらい can mark an approximate quantity such as 三時間ほど and 三時間くらい, with ほど sounding more formal, and both can mark degree or extent such as 泣きたいほど嬉しい and 泣きたいくらい嬉しい. In negative comparisons both can set N as the benchmark, as in ジェニファーほどよく勉強する学生はいない and ジェニファーくらいよく勉強する学生はいない, both meaning no student studies to Jennifer's degree. The core overlap is extent and approximation, with ほど tending to frame N as the upper limit of degree and くらい tending to frame N as a rough standard of amount or degree.

ほど expresses degree, extent, or approximation, meaning to the extent of or about. It follows plain form verbs as in 言うほど, nouns as in 旅ほど, and quantities as in 10分ほど. To describe an adjective, ほど comes before it, as in これほどひどい, often with a demonstrative or verb clause setting the standard. It is neutral in speech and writing, but keep the order correct and do not add な after a na-adjective before ほど.

くらい and its variant ぐらい mean about or around and mark an amount, time, distance, or degree as an estimate rather than an exact figure. They attach after a numeral plus counter or other quantity phrase, as in 5分くらい or 2マイルぐらい, and after question words like どのくらい or どれくらい to ask how long, how much, or how far in an approximate sense. The two forms have the same meaning, with ぐらい more common in conversation.
