こと (koto)

Meaning & usage

こと turns a phrase into a noun-like thing, so it can be talked about or acted on as an object. It follows plain verb forms (したいこと, できること) and can also stand as a noun meaning a thing or matter (そんなこと).

1. 日本人にほんじんならそんなことはけっしてしないでしょう。

   A Japanese would never do such a thing.

2. したいことが出来なければ出来ることをしなさい。

   When you can't do what you want, you do what you can.

3. あなたからさまざまなことを学びました。

   I learned a lot from you.

4. みんなもそうなのかな、と思うことくらいしかできない。
