そして (soshite)

Meaning & usage

そして means and or and then and connects two sentences by adding information or showing what happened next. It is placed at the start of the second sentence, after a complete sentence ending in forms like です, ます, or the plain form. It is neutral and common in both speech and writing, but it cannot join nouns or verbs inside a single sentence.

1. 食堂しょくどうのごはんは安やすいです。そして、おいしいです。

   The food in the cafeteria is cheap, and it's delicious.

2. あさごはんを食べました。そして学校へ行きました。

   I ate breakfast. And then I went to school.

3. きのう映画を見ました。そしてうちへ帰りました。

   I watched a movie yesterday. And then I went home.

4. ともだちが来ました。そしてゲームをしました。

   A friend came over. And then we played games.

5. この本は安いです。そしてとてもおもしろいです。

   This book is cheap. And it is very interesting.

6. そとは寒いです。そして風が強いです。

   It is cold outside. And the wind is strong.

7. 母は料理が上手です。そして父はやさしいです。

   My mother is good at cooking. And my father is kind.

8. へやをそうじしました。そしてせんたくをしました。

   I cleaned my room. And then I did the laundry.
