すると (suruto)

Meaning & usage

すると starts a new sentence to present what happened next, with the sense of then or at that point. It is used when the next event follows naturally from the previous situation or appears as a new discovery, often with surprise. It is a fixed conjunction placed at the start of the sentence, usually as すると、..., and comes from そうすると. For neutral listing of actions in order, その後 or それから is more natural.
