わ (wa)

Meaning & usage

The sentence-final particle わ adds a soft, emphatic assertion and is used in female speech. It attaches directly to the end of a sentence after plain-form verbs, i-adjectives, or nouns with です, as in かわかると思うわ and ですわ.

1. 私わたしこんなにおそくまで外そと出歩であるいたことないわい。

   I've never stayed out this late walking before.

2. 明日外にでられるようなら、二人がどうしているかわかると思うわ。

   Tomorrow, if we can go out, we'll see how they are.

3. 車？ああ・・・あのリムジンでしたら、私がチャーターした物ですわ。

   Car? Ah, if you mean that limousine, - I chartered it.

4. あ、そうだったわね。じゃあ、みみっちいのはあんたの買い方ってことね。

   Oh yes, you're right. Well, it's the way you shop that's tight-fisted then.

5. でももヘチマもないわ。

   There's no but about it!

6. 本気のはずがないわ。

   You cannot be serious.

7. 花、元気ないわね。水をやりたいんだけど、水差しない？

   The flowers don't look happy. I'd like to water them. Is there a watering can?

8. もうよろしくてよ。実のない会話にはうんざりですわ。

   That is enough. I have had it with fruitless conversation.
