為（に）・ため（に） (ni tame ni)

Meaning & usage

ために expresses purpose or benefit, meaning in order to do something or for the sake of someone or something. It attaches to the non past form of a verb, either affirmative like 学ぶために or negative like 忘れないために, and to a noun with の as in 仕事のため or あなたのために. When it modifies another noun, に must be removed, giving ための plus noun as in パーティーのための場所, and ために cannot follow the past tense when expressing purpose.
