Meaning & usage
かい is a casual sentence ending that turns a plain statement into a yes or no question, often with a friendly or inviting tone as in 食べないかい. It attaches to plain verbs and i-adjectives, as in 行くかい and 高いかい, and to nouns and na-adjectives without だ in the present, as in 元気かい. It is informal and masculine leaning, so it is unsuitable for polite speech or for talking to superiors.
