ところだ (tokoroda)

Meaning & usage

ところだ expresses that an action has just been completed, as in the examples where a verb in plain past form plus ところだ means the speaker just finished doing it. It attaches to the plain form of a verb (past form for 'just did'). It can also appear as ところだが to introduce something one was about to do before something else happened.

   I've been to the supermarket.

2. ちょうどその本を読み終わったところだよ。

   I have just finished reading the book.

3. 私はちょうど昼食を食べ終えたところだ。

4. とにかくメシ・・・といきたいところだが、その前に用を足すことにした。

   Anyhow, lunch ... is where I wanted to go but I decided to go to the toilet first.
