Meaning & usage
られる expresses ability or possibility, meaning that someone can do something or that something is possible under the circumstances. For ichidan verbs, drop final る and add られる, as in 食べる becoming 食べられる, and the resulting form conjugates as an ichidan verb. The irregular verb 来る has the potential form 来られる, which should be learned as its own form rather than by the regular ichidan rule.
