ばよかった (bayokatta)

Meaning & usage

ばよかった expresses regret or reproach about something that already happened, meaning I wish I had done it or you should have done it. It follows the conditional ば form of a verb, as in 来ればよかった or しておけばよかった, with negatives formed as in 使わなければよかった. The regret refers to the past, so よかった stays in the past tense even when speaking in the present, and adding のに at the end strengthens blame or disappointment.
