か(どうか) (ka douka)

Meaning & usage

It embeds a yes-no question inside a larger sentence to report not knowing, asking, checking, or worrying if something is true. Attach か or かどうか to the plain form of a verb or i-adjective, as in 降るかどうか or 安いか, and drop だ after a noun or na-adjective, as in 学生かどうか or 静かかどうか. かどうか stresses whether or not and sounds more careful than か alone, and it is often followed by verbs such as 分かる, 聞く, 確かめる, and 教える.
