JLPT Grammar Comparison

かどうか vs か否か

How to tell them apart

The core contrast is register and weight: かどうか is the everyday spoken and written form for embedding a yes-no question, while か否か is a stiff, formal variant used in serious writing or speeches. Swapping か否か into casual speech sounds pompous, and using かどうか in a legal or academic sentence can feel too light. The meaning is identical; the choice is purely about tone and context.

N4

whether or not; if

か(どうか) turns a question into an embedded one, meaning whether or not something is the case. It follows plain-form clauses; after nouns and na-adjectives, だ is usually dropped before か. It appears in sentences expressing wondering, asking, or reporting a yes/no question.

  1. みんなもそうなのかな、とおもうことくらいしかできない。

I can only wonder if this is the same for everyone else.

  2. 「どうかしたの?」と小さな白いウサギが聞きました。

"What's the matter?" asked the little white rabbit.

か否か ka ka

N1

if or if not; whether or not something is the case

か否か presents two alternatives, X or not X, and works like かどうか but with a formal, written tone. It attaches to a plain-form verb or i-adjective, to na-adjectives and nouns plus である, and to だ-ending phrases; the negative alternative is expressed by 否か itself, so no separate negative form is needed.

  1. 我々われわれがそのたたかいにつかいなかはきわめて重要じゅうようであろう。

It will be very important whether we win the battle or not.

  2. 彼が成功するか否かは、彼の健康の如何によります。

Whether he will succeed or not depends upon his health.
