か否か (ka ka)

Meaning & usage

か否か expresses whether or not something is the case and is used to present two opposite possibilities as an embedded question, often with verbs like 決める or phrases about importance or dependence. It follows the plain form, as in 行くか否か or 高いか否か, with na-adjectives and nouns requiring である, as in 安全であるか否か or 学生であるか否か, and 否 is read ひか. The pattern is formal and common in writing, speeches, and official documents, and the explanatory の should not be inserted before か.
