ものなら (mononara)

Meaning & usage

ものなら attaches to the volitional form (しよう) or potential/plain verb forms and sets a conditional meaning 'if one can or would do ~ at all', often with a negative consequence in the main clause, as in 遅刻しようものなら. It can also mean 'if there is anything worth doing', as in 面白いものなら.
