ものか (monoka)

Meaning & usage

ものか expresses forceful denial or refusal, meaning something is absolutely not true or will never happen. It follows the plain form of verbs and i-adjectives, な after na-adjectives, and である or だ after nouns, as in 行くものか or 幽霊であるものか, with もんか as the casual spoken form. It sounds blunt and defiant, often used in argument or inner resolve, and is stronger than a plain negative like ない.
