ものではない (monodehanai)

Meaning & usage

ものではない attaches to the plain form of a verb (dictionary or potential form) and states that something is not the kind of thing one should or can do, often correcting an overly simple assumption. It carries a somewhat formal, written tone, as in saying a language cannot be mastered overnight.
