限り (ri)

Meaning & usage

限り marks a limit or range, meaning as far as, as long as, or as much as possible. It follows nouns with に関する限り, as in 私に関する限り, and follows verbs in dictionary form or negative form plus 限り, as in 知る限りでは and 来ない限り. Potential forms plus 限り and the set phrase 出来る限り express doing something to the fullest extent possible. Note that V-ない限り often pairs with a negative consequence and means unless or only if.
