Meaning & usage
に過ぎない expresses that something is nothing more than what is stated, and is used to downplay its importance, size, or value. It follows nouns, numbers with counters, and nominalized clauses with こと, as in 子供に過ぎない or 友情に過ぎない. The past form is に過ぎなかった. It sounds formal and written, and is stronger and more dismissive than だけ.
