そうかと言って (soukato tte)

Meaning & usage

そうかと言って acknowledges what the other person just said, then pushes back with a reason why you still cannot fully accept or act on it. It stands alone at the start of a sentence, often followed by a わけにもいかない pattern, and carries a conversational, slightly hesitant tone.

1. 安やすいのは分わかった。そうかと言いって、壊こわれそうな物ものは買かえない。

   I understand it's cheap. That said, I can't buy something that looks like it'll break.

2. そうかと言って、今日中に全部やるわけにもいかない。

   Having said that, I can't exactly get everything done by today either.

3. 確かに彼は悪くない。そうかと言って、謝る必要もないだろう。

   Sure, he's not at fault. Still, there's no need for him to apologize either.

4. そうかと言って、値段を半分にするわけにはいかない。

   That said, we can't just cut the price in half.
