限り (ri)

Meaning & usage

限り marks the outer limit of scope, degree, or time, meaning as far as, to the utmost, or for as long as. It follows a verb in dictionary form, ta-form, or potential form, as in 知る限りでは, 見た限りでは, or できる限り, and follows nouns with の, as in 声の限り, or with に関する. It often pairs with では to limit a judgment to what the speaker knows or sees, and functional できる is normally written in hiragana.
