に応じて・応じた (ni jite jita)

Meaning & usage

The pattern expresses that an action, amount, or response varies to match or answer a noun such as income, ability, or a request. It follows a noun with に応じて when modifying a verb, as in 能力に応じて働く, and with に応じた when modifying a noun or ending a clause, as in 能力に応じた仕事 or 求婚に応じた. It is common in formal explanations, rules, and procedures, and often conveys proportion or compliance rather than cause.
