Meaning & usage
にほかならない asserts that something is nothing other than the noun before it, often to reframe a fact as proof of effort, cause, or true identity. It attaches to a noun with に, as in 努力にほかならない or 脅しにほかならない, and conjugates like ない, for example にほかならなかった for the past. It sounds formal and written, so avoid it in casual speech where だけだ or だ would be more natural.
