但し・ただし (shi tadashi)

Meaning & usage

ただし adds an exception or condition to what was stated immediately before, meaning however or provided that. It stands alone at the start of a new sentence, usually as ただし、 followed by a complete sentence, and it does not attach directly to a verb, noun, or adjective. It sounds formal and appears in rules, notices, and explanations, so a prior statement allowing something must come first.
