Meaning & usage
まい expresses a negative volition or conjecture, meaning the speaker will not do something or something probably will not happen. It attaches to the dictionary form of a verb (する becomes しまい or すまい). It often appears in the patterns 〜ようと〜まいと or 〜ようが〜まいが, meaning whether one does or does not do something, and is a formal, written-style expression.
