に越したことはない (ni shitakotohanai)

Meaning & usage

に越したことはない means that nothing beats the thing mentioned, i.e. it is the best or safest option. It follows i-adjectives, nouns, and verbs in the plain negative or dictionary form, as in 早い, 安い, 用心, and 言わぬ. The tone is idiomatic and often states a general preference or piece of advice.
