に反して/反する (ni shite suru)

Meaning & usage

に反して/反する means something happens against or contrary to what precedes it, such as wishes, will, or expectations. It attaches to a noun plus the particle に; the plain form 反する can also follow に to modify a noun, as in 期待に反するもの. It often highlights a contrast between expectation and reality.
