に反して/反する (ni shite suru)

に反して expresses that something goes against or contradicts a noun such as an expectation, rule, intention, or fact. It follows a noun directly, as in 予想に反して or 規則に反する, and appears as に反して for adverbial use and に反する, に反した, に反しない for modification and negation. It is a formal written style expression, and the noun before に must represent a standard that can be violated.
