Meaning & usage
において marks the place, time, or field in which something happens or holds true, similar to in, at, or on. It attaches to a noun, as in 日本において, and における is the form used when the phrase modifies another noun, as in 日本における研究. It is formal and common in writing, news, and academic contexts, where で or に would sound too casual.
